The instrument itself has a spruce top with maple back and sides. Other parts are of dyed hardwood with a metal alloy four tuner tailpiece. The violin has been meticulously set-up and packed in a protective cloth. The bridge is in place, the strings are loosened for shipping. The bow is made of wood, and rosin for the bow is included. I received this for Christmas. I wanted to start with something inexpensive, just to see if I would like it. I've played around with recorders and flutes and thought I'd try strings. I'm now into Bluegrass and the flutes just don't cut it! Anyway, just two days and I can run the scale without driving my lovely wife to drinking! I thought I may have trouble with my sausage size fingers, but they are fitting well. The software is for kids. I really wish it had something for adults. Like the other review, my kit was missing the cloth. Big deal! It's still a great deal.

This is more of an inquiry than a review, as we just received this today and I haven't reviewed the software program yet. Can someone else who's bought this kit tell me whether the back of their fret board (the neck) is finished/varnished or not? The back of ours is just bare wood, and I suspect it might be defective (like maybe they forgot to finish/varnish the neck). Also, it says it comes with a "cloth" and the picture of the items in the kit shows a white rectangular object (which I guess is supposed to be the shoulder rest??). The instrument came in a white mesh bag (the same paper/cloth-like material they use for those blue Amazon gift bags). There were napkin-covered styrofoam blocks under the strings as well. I stuffed them in the bag and rolled it up to use as a shoulder pad. Not sure if that was what those were for, or if we are missing the "cloth" that's supposed to be included.
Our bridge is cut somewhat lopsided (the part under the G & D strings is higher than the height under the A & E strings). The violin seems to play okay, despite the unsymmetrical bridge, though it's having trouble staying in tune. Might just be the cold weather or that we need to break in the new strings. Wish the kit came with an extra set of strings too, just in case.
I look forward to hearing what others got with this kit and what they think of it. I'll update later when I've had a chance to actually review the software.

Great for a beginner of any age

Great for beginners of any age. Packaged well. Received in perfect condition. The only thing is is that it would have been nice to have included some easy sheet music. Purchased for my husband that wanted to learn to play it. He was very happy to receive this as a Christmas gift.

Had I not thrown away the box and labels I would have returned it. My sons music teacher said it was a waste of money and my son is not happy with it as the sound is terrible compared to the other kids Violins in the class.
